The imperative mood is the grammatical tool that Spanish uses to give direct orders, make requests, or suggestions. Mastering it is essential for communicating fluently in daily life.

Key Vocabulary: Pairs of Opposite Verbs

Learning a verb and its opposite at the same time is the fastest way to double your vocabulary. This technique gives you the flexibility needed to quickly change an order or an idea, for example, from “to open” to “to close” or from “to go up” to “to go down.” Mastering these pairs is key to communicating with clarity and precision, allowing you to understand and express opposite ideas without hesitation.

  • Abrir (To Open) – Cerrar (To Close)
  • Subir (To Go Up/Raise) – Bajar (To Go Down/Lower)
  • Entrar (To Enter) – Salir (To Exit/Leave)
  • Comenzar/Empezar (To Start) – Terminar (To Finish)
  • Recordar (To Remember) – Olvidar (To Forget)
  • Aceptar (To Accept) – Rechazar (To Reject)
  • Encender (To Turn On) – Apagar (To Turn Off)
  • Construir (To Build) – Destruir (To Destroy)
  • Reír (To Laugh) – Llorar (To Cry)
  • Mojar (To Wet) – Secar (To Dry)
  • Acercar (To Bring Closer) – Alejar (To Move Away)
  • Unir (To Unite/Join) – Separar (To Separate)

IMPORTANT: Some verbs are irregular and have a stem change (diphthong).
