“Empezar” or “comenzar”, which is better?

One of the most common questions my students ask me is what the difference is between verbs empezar y comenzar, or terminar y acabar. 🤔

The truth is that there is no substantial difference. They are interchangeable verbs that you can use according to your preference. In other words, these verbs are synonyms. 😊

List of verb pairs with the same meaning

Here is a list of the 10 most commonly used verbs:

  • gustar mucho = encantar (to like a lot)
  • pasar = ocurrir (to happen)
  • empezar = comenzar (to start)
  • acabar = terminar (to finish)
  • caminar = andar (to walk)
  • mostrar = enseñar (to show)
  • irse = marcharse (to leave)
  • contestar = responder (to answer)
